HAY RIVER (Aug 17/98) - Its only one room with one shelving unit and it needs food.

Kathleen Courtoreille of the Hay River Food Bank says that the organization needs more donations. The food bank, located in the Metis Nation Building, is open every second week, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.

The majority of the goods donated to the food bank come from local businesses, but it also depends on donations from individuals. And there's always room for new volunteers.

Courtoreille, who runs the bank, says she hopes it will become a bigger place to help more people within Hay River.

"There are a lot of people who need help -- food help -- in Hay River," says Courtoreille, who enjoys helping people out and says that, for her, running the food bank is also, "a way to pass the time."

Courtoreille wants to move the food bank to another, more permanent location. The space currently occupied by the food bank will soon be needed for classrooms.

Courtoreille also hopes for a larger place to store the food because the organization is currently sharing storage space. In order to encourage citizens to donate, the food bank is considering placing bins around town to collect food.
