NNSL (Jul 08/98) - Lightning strikes are continuing to wreak havoc on wooded areas along the Ingraham Trail outside the city.

Though there's no immediate danger to homes and property on the Trail, firefighters have been busy trying to tackle the forest fires.

"There's about four fires right now that are say within 30 or 40 kilometres of the trail itself," said Dennis Mahussier, manager of fire operations in Fort Smith yesterday.

Right now firefighters are dealing with the fires with the resources on hand but continue to look for additional resources. Helicopters were busy Monday night dealing with the fires until close to midnight.

"We've still kept a lid on it but at this time we are saying more lightning is expected again today and there will be more fires expected today. We have to take it one step at a time," said Mahussier.

The Yellowknife region has had a total of 50 fires so far this season. As of July 5, about 20 fires had been reported in the region.
