NNSL (Jun 05/98) - The multi-nominated musical Guys and Dolls received the recognition it deserves on the nomination list for the 1998 Aurora Awards.

The awards are presented every year to members of the Yellowknife community theatre scene for excellence in roles both on and off stage.

And Guys and Dolls is this year's overall top production, with 15 nominations in the musical theatre-revue division. Among the nods for the musical are Outstanding Female Lead Performance in a Musical to Katherine Keyes for her performance as Sarah Brown. In the same category, Christine Machtans received a nomination for her performance as Miss Adelaide.

The musical received two more nominations in the Outstanding Female Supporting Performance in a Musical. Charlotte L. Baker was nominated for her performance as Sister Martha and Kate Tompkins as Sister Agatha Abernathy.

But the men weren't left out of the running either. In the Outstanding Male in a Musical, Frank Hamilton was nominated for his performance as Nathan Detroit, and to Tate Clarke as Sky Masterson in the same production.

In the Outstanding Male Supporting Performance in a Musical, Sean Daly was given a nomination for his performance as Nicely Nicely Johnson.

Guys and Dolls also received nominations for Outstanding Design of Costumes, Outstanding Design of Properties, Best Choreography in a Musical, Outstanding Musical Direction (choral), Outstanding Production Concept, and Outstanding Direction.

Over on the theatre- side of the Aurora Awards, the Lunch Pail Theatre production of the Ann Marie MacDonald's play Good Night Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) took home six nominations.

Kirsten Watt was nominated in the Outstanding Female Performance category for her work as Constance Ledbelly. Pam Fawcett, who portrayed four different characters in the production -- including Desdemona -- was nominated as Outstanding Female Supporting Performance.

The play also received nominations for Outstanding Design of Stage Set, Outstanding Technical Achievement, Outstanding Production Concept, and Outstanding Direction.

The Aurora Awards were held last night at NACC. Look to future editions of the Yellowknifer to find out who won what and for which play.
