NNSL (Jun 24/98) - Jackie Gogowich describes herself as an avid flag collector.

Like many collectors, she saw an avenue to turn her particular interest into a small business.

"As a new mom, I was looking for an opportunity to start a home-based business," she said.

So she combined her collecting hobby with a bit of entrepreneurial spirit and "When Flags Fly" was born.

"Not only do flags offer a warm and inviting atmosphere to the neighborhood, they help get us through the long cold winters," she said.

To display the flags, Gogowich plans open houses at 118 Rivett Crescent.

Gogowich, who buys the heavy-weight nylon flags wholesale, said the flags created interest over the winter months.

She came to Yellowknife last October from St. Albert, Alta. Her husband Randy works for Finning, a contractor at BHP's Ekati mine.

"Whether you are a one-time flag buyer or a serious collector, you can find a decorative flag for all reasons or seasons."

She also will have the colorful products on display at local craft fairs.

When Flags Fly was one of several businesses with a booth out on Franklin Avenue during Friday's Raven Mad Daze.

"That was my biggest sale yet. The response was great."

Gogowich has had three sales so far with more planned. The next is scheduled Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
