Mayor kept in the dark
"I don't know that there was manure running into the lake," he said. "Every bit of information I got was that everything was OK." NNSL (May 08/98) - Mayor Dave Lovell says he has yet to be informed that runoff from a manure-laden cow pen from the Tuaro dairy site has reached Fiddler's Lake. "I don't know that there was manure running into the lake," said Lovell. "Every bit of information I got was that everything was OK." Lovell took exception to two recent Yellowknifer stories on the city's failure to respond to a Tuaro neighbor's concerns about the manure. When the city failed to respond to the concerns, Dan Prima reported the site to the spills hotline. An April 21 inspection by the territorial environmental protection branch revealed runoff from the manure had drained through the woods and into the lake. But the mayor said the city acted to correct the manure problem before the stories appeared. Asked what the city had done to clean up the property before the stories were published, Lovell said, "I don't know. It might have been just that we were monitoring the property." |
