NNSL (May 29/98) - Some park-goers are getting a little too enthusiastic.

Regional park superintendent Gary Tees says trees and park facilities are being vandalized. "It seems there's something vandalised every weekend," he said.

The latest act is the cutting of bark on a tree out at the Yellowknife River boat launch.

The tree, which could be as much as 100 years old, now likely poses a threat to people picnicking nearby and will probably have to be cut down.

"A strong wind could blow the tree down," said Robert Beaulieu, an NWT Transport Department employee.

Beaulieu and co-worker Walter Hardisty spotted the damage while having lunch.

Tees said other areas that have been vandalized recently include specimens in Fred Henne Park, the Cameron River day-use and Cameron River Rapids non-park area.

At Fred Henne park, vandals snapped the gate and damaged washroom and a lifeguard station doors at Fred Henne park.

Tees hopes someone comes forward with information about the vandalism.

"The actions of a few ruin it for everyone. We have park officers that patrol daily but they cannot be everywhere. We're hoping someone who saw something comes forward."
