NNSL (May 27/98) - About 30 Sir John Franklin students spent the weekend watching movies, playing video games, participating in sports and studying -- basic weekend teenage activities with one exception: no food.
The youths were participating in a 30-hour fast to help raise money for World Vision Canada.
Two video setups, one Nintendo 64 and sleeping bags filled the rooms and hallways around the school's foyer. Students had full use of the gym and were able to go outside.
"It's been pretty low- key this year," said Cynthia Russel, "The group is really mature." Russel and fellow supervisor Wade Carpenter were fasting alongside the teens.
"It's a lot of fun and it's for a good cause," said Stephen Puskas, one of five student co-ordinators who collected donations from local businesses.
"Wal-Mart was really cool. They gave us tons of juice," said Puskas. Choice Video supplied movies and Microplay provided arcade entertainment.
All together, the students raised almost $3,000. Grade nine student, Vicky Quiring was collected sponsors over $500.
"I want to help all the starving kids," said Quiring.
When asked what they plan to eat next, Puskas said he was looking forward to pizza, while Quiring had McDonald's on her mind.
"Definitely no juice," said Puskas.
