Tax arrears jump
Debts compounded by city's high interest rates

Northern News Services
NNSL (May 01/98) - Property tax arrears rose by 25 per cent last year, according to the city's audited financial statements.
As of March 31 this year, Gold Range Investments -- owner of the Gold Range Hotel, the Gallery and The Cave Club among other assets -- had the biggest tax debt, $630,460.
City tax arrears gain momentum the longer left unpaid. The city charges 1.8 per cent interest each month on unpaid taxes. Taking compounding interest into account, that works out to 24 per cent annually.
As of Dec. 31, 1997, the city was owed $4.9 million in property taxes, up from $3.9 million the previous year
