NNSL (May 15/98) - "An incredible shortage of pickles," is not the only problem Northerners are facing this time of year.

Unpredictable ferry operation times have cost businesses like Yellowknife's Co-op, "a little more than usual in freight," says manager Al Krukoff.

On May 7, the NWT Department of Transportation attempted an early ferry opening, but was forced to close it down three days later.

"Excessive ice chunks from Great Slave Lake are flowing down the river, blocking the ferry's passage," says the department's Dale Thompson

"Helicopter transport was available during breakup, but once the government sent word the ferry was running we pulled our equipment," says RTL Enterprise switchboard operator Randy Cook.

But then all transport in and out of Yellowknife came to a halt Monday evening.

RTL trucks waited patiently in Enterprise until they were able to begin crossing again Thursday morning.

"It's all a part of doing business in the North", says Cook.

At this time ferry operation is unpredictable and travellers are advised to check with the Department of Transportation before setting out on the highway.
