Keewatin wins big in Winnipeg
Kivalliq News brings home 10 awards from community newspaper convention

NNSL (Apr 29/98) - In keeping with the winning ways of the Keewatin, the region's newspaper dominated the annual newspaper awards held in this month Winnipeg, Man.

Kivalliq News won 10 awards, with seven firsts, including the top award of Best All-Round Newspaper, at the Manitoba Community Newspaper Association's annual meeting April 18.

Fifty community newspapers from Manitoba and the NWT submitted 339 entries in the Better Newspaper Competition Awards.

In the general categories, Kivalliq News took first in Best in Class, Best Typography and Best Classified Section. For Best Editoral Page, Kivalliq News came in second and for Best Front Page took third.

Former editor Jeff Colbourne won a first in two photography categories -- Best Photo Essay and Best Sports Photo -- with his coverage of the Nunavut 200 dogsled race.

Present editor Jennifer Pritchett also excelled in photography, taking third place in the Best Feature Photo category with her picture of children hugging a polar bear.

Nunavut Mining, a Kivalliq News special publication for last year's Nunavut Mining Symposium, took first in the Best Special Section supplement.
