Arena offer going, going...
'Yes' side down, but not out by Richard Gleeson
NNSL (Apr 24/98) - With the city's plans for a twin-pad arena derailed, the GNWT is going ahead and making plans of its own for the property the city had hoped to build on. "We're going to go through a process here where we'll recommend to the financial management board that we rescind the offer and retain the building," said Gay Kennedy, director of corporate services for the department of public works. The GNWT had offered the property to the city for $1, on the condition it be used for an arena. On April 15, ratepayers voted 920 to 556 against the city borrowing $2.79 million to build the twin arena. Kennedy said materials stored in other sites around the city may be moved to the building. Meanwhile, those who support arenas may be down, but they are definitely not out. Ter Hamer hosted a meeting Tuesday in which a small group of arena supporters outlined a presentation to be made to council Monday. |
