Resume drop-off station set up for NWT summer students by Jeff Colbourne
NNSL (Apr 20/98) - Students looking for employment with the territorial government won't have to do too much running around this summer. A one-stop resume depot has been set up on the sixth floor of the Laing building in Yellowknife. Students from across the North can send, fax or drop off their resumes for distribution to the various government departments. "A lot of students don't know where all the departments are," said program co-ordinator, Tasha Wasylkiw, a Yellowknifer and political science student at the University of Lethbridge. "This is easier for them." When students bring or send in their resumes they have to indicate where they prefer to work. Regional offices have been set up also where students can drop their resumes. Lynn Cook, said this is the first time they have run a central resume drop-off for students looking for work with the GNWT. "It's an opportunity for students to be able to put their resumes in one place and all the departments can get it," said Cook who's in charge of corporate human resources services unit with the GNWT. Since the program started a few weeks ago, an electronic database has been set up so that when a student drops off a resume all their particulars are entered into the computer and sent to all the GNWT departments. Human resource people in each department can go into the database, have a look at the summary information and if they want a copy of the actual resume the centre can send it over. The department will do the actual hiring. "So far we have 110 resumes and we look to get a few hundred," said Cook. At the end of the summer an evaluation will be done of the program. They will ask students and the departments if they found the service valuable and make some decision whether or not they want to continue on with another year. |
