What have we gotten ourselves into?
Mining diamonds is not like mining gold or base metals

NNSL (Apr 15/98) - The companies that control the diamond industry are among the largest in the world.

They are used to getting their way. The prospect of Yellowknife, or even the NWT, dealing with the transnational corporations that call the shots evokes images of David and Goliath.

So who are we dealing with, now that the North is about to become a major player?

In a special report, Yellowknifer takes a look at Rio Tinto and BHP, two the of the world's largest mining companies and the newest members of the NWT business community. We also examine De Beers, the corporation that controls the distribution of most of the world's diamonds, and review a similar case history in Australia.
