New site for new gym
Moved from William Mac to pool area by Richard Gleeson
NNSL (Apr 08/98) - If all goes smoothly, the city centre of indoor recreation will soon grow by one building. The Yellowknife gymnastics club is asking the city to approve a plan to build a gymnasium between the Ruth Inch Memorial Pool and the Wade Hamer Mini Golf centre. Originally, the gym was to be built beside William McDonald school on Taylor Road. Though gym club officials could not be reached for comment, Mayor Dave Lovell said the change of location was, in part, due to the reduced expense of hooking up sewer and water lines at the Ruth Inch Pool site. Lovell said Ald. Dave Ramsay suggested the new site and the gym club happily agreed to it. The city's acting senior administrator, Max Hall, said the new location raises at least one concern the city needs to address. "It's certainly going to be very high profile. As soon as people drive in, it's the first thing you're going to see." Hall said council should do what it can to ensure the building complements the other buildings in the area, namely, the curling club, Yk Community Crena and pool. Those controls would likely be included in the long-term lease the city is signing with the gym club for the property. Of the total $2.8 million requested in next Wednesday's debenture plebiscite, $140,000 is for the gymnastics club. |
