City Hall overhaul
Renovations under way by Derek Neary
NNSL (Apr 03/98) - There's no need to wear hardhats downstairs at City Hall, but watch your step. Renovations will see the municipal enforcement, human resources and computer services departments all move downstairs, where other tenants had previously been renting office space. The upstairs will be expanded for existing staff. Approximately 60 people work out of the building, which was built in 1975. "Over the years, the city is absorbing more and more (responsibilities). For example, we're looking after more property assessment," explained purchasing manager Roy Clarke. He added that administrative services are now being provided for Yellowknife health and social services and economic development is expected to expand soon as well. "All this means we have to get a few extra bodies to do some of these extra duties," Clarke said. "We've taken over the whole building." The renovations began early in March and are expected to finish later this month when a new floor is put in place. The winning bid for the project came in at $80,000, according to Clarke. Council alloted $100,000 for the renovations in last years budget. |
