NNSL (Mar 25/98) - The face of business is sporting a pretty healthy afterglow in the wake of a successful Arctic Winter Games.

Yellowknife Chamber of Commerce executive director Cheryl Best said Yellowknife businesses should absolutely have no problem meeting the estimated $4 million in revenues from the Games.

But there is no way to tell the specific financial boost the Games gave the city, said Best on Monday.

"Even if I sent out a survey to my membership and say `how much were your sales up this week compared to the same period last year?' only 20 per cent of them are going to answer me anyway. So it's all kind of guesstimates," she said. "But, I know that there's an awful lot of smiling faces out there."

The tourism was good and people took advantage of all the different things to see and do in Yellowknife. There were many visitors who came through the Visitor's Centre and athletes made the rounds at the malls.

"The Games were good for Yellowknife all around. Good for attitude. Good for the community," said Best.

With the event now long gone, one question remains: what's next?

"We have busy season coming up right now. Here at the chamber we have Caribou Carnival, we have an economic summit coming up, a secondary diamond industry conference coming to town, there's a powerplay seminar which is a power management workshop and a spring trade show. That's all between now and May 10," said Best.
