Fort Simpson (Mar 20/98) - Renee Lapierre says he's always wanted to have a crown. And, last week, he received just that -- along with a variety of prizes, and a sash and robe -- as he was crowned the 1998 Beavertail Jamboree Prince in Fort Simpson.

"I wanted to be the prince and wear a crown," the well-spoken Grade 1 student said in an interview over the weekend. "I couldn't make a crown so I had to win."

And win he did. He sold close to 900 carnival lottery tickets -- 869 to be exact -- and was crowned in front of a large crowd at Thomas Simpson high school Thursday night.

"I sold them at the coffee shop and at Bompas (elementary school)," he said. "My biggest sales were (to) Pat Rowe and Owen Rowe -- they bought 30 each."

Kids around the village should take note of these names for upcoming lotteries and sales.

But, the job didn't end there. Far from it.

All weekend, Lapierre had to be on hand for as many jamboree events as possible, complete with his crown and outfit.

"I recommend the job to other kids," he said.

To his credit, the little prince says that while he has now had his moment of fame, he won't be running again next year. He says someone else should have a chance at getting crowned prince for the 1999 Beavertail Jamboree. Renee also says he knows who he'll be throwing his support to.

Considering his resounding success this year, no one should be surprised if his advice and support is eagerly courted next year.

Besides a trip to Yellowknife, courtesy of First Air, a Mack Travel Bag and roses -- which Renee proudly gave to his brother -- the prince will also receive a free dinner for two at the Nahanni Inn. Once again, he already has someone in mind to ask along.

"I want to thank everyone who bought tickets from me," Renee said.

He gave a special thank you to his mother, Ann, the Nahanni Inn's "Momma" and his aunty for all their help in selling tickets.

Congratulations, Renee.
