Man burns ex-girlfriend

PANGNIRTUNG (Mar 09/98) - A man who allegedly burned his estranged girlfriend was remanded in custody until his appearance in Iqaluit territorial court today.

The woman was severely burned outside Nunavut Arctic College around 1 p.m. last Monday.

Investigating RCMP Const. Ross MacIsaac said there were severe burns to the victim's upper body, particularly to the head and facial areas.

She was medevaced to Iqaluit and later flown to a burn unit at an Ontario hospital where she is in stable condition.

Her 29-year-old estranged boyfriend has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and break and enter. Alcohol was reportedly not a factor in the incident.
