Looking to the future

FORT SIMPSON (Mar 06/98) - Next time you stop at Checkpoint, don't be surprised if little Jeffrey McKay asks you for a business card.

For the last few months, the bright and cheery five-year-old has embarked on a quest. You see, he's already looking to the future and wants to make sure all his options are open when he finishes school -- in about 12 or 13 years.

So, he's begun collecting business cards from all those who stop in for a meal, gas or stay at the popular restaurant, gas station and motel owned by his parents, Lynn and Wayne McKay.

He now has about 250 cards in his collection.

"I want to have somewhere to apply for a job when I finish school," he says when asked what made him start asking people for their business cards. "I thought it would be fun."

So far, he says his favorite cards include a sticker-card from Liard Taxi, Frank's Guiding Service from Alberta Hunting, and, the card he just snagged from Grant Beck, a champion Canadian dog musher.

And, a friend recently used their computer to make cards up for Jeffrey. Not surprisingly they say Jeffrey McKay, "The business card man," on them.

A hockey fan, Jeffrey says he would be thrilled if he could get a hold of the business cards of NHL goalies Felix Potvin and Patrick Roy.

A student at Bompas elementary school in Fort Simpson, Jeffrey says he's thinking about becoming a police officer or helicopter pilot when he grows up.

In the meantime, he'll gladly accept the business cards of anyone coming to Checkpoint in the months to come.

So, have your business cards ready folks.
