NNSL (Mar 06/98) - The Yellowknife public school board hopes to have a new school trustee by next Tuesday.

"We received six applicants by the deadline on Friday, we had a meeting on the weekend to review the list and then we selected a few that we want to do some quick interviews with," said Terry Brookes, the board member responsible to gathering letters of interests.

The board hopes to arrange interviews next week with the two short-listed candidates. They want to announce the trustee's name at their monthly board meeting on Tuesday night and swear him in at the next meeting.

A variety of candidates, all men, vied for the post.

"I would say it's a fair cross-section of the population," he said, adding that a lot of people did some research on the position but only a handful applied.

It seemed once people found out the time commitments they had to make they may have become less interested. A board member is expected to punch between eight and 10 hours a week attending meetings and doing their own research.

In return, trustees are paid an honorarium of $5,000 a year.

There's a variety of criteria a board member should meet, said Brookes. "One person's interest can be very different from another person," said Brookes.

"We're hoping to have somebody who adds diversity to the board, willing to dedicate the time and has the interest," he said.
