INUVIK (Mar 06/98) - A man was taken to hospital early Wednesday morning after other people noticed someone had apparently attacked him with an axe.

Ambulance attendants were called to a Mackenzie Road residence at about 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday to help a man whose friends observed blood running down his arm while they were sitting around.

The man, who is in his 50s, was taken to Inuvik Regional Hospital where he received seven stitches to close a cut on the top of his shoulder near the neck. He had no memory of either being attacked, or who attacked him.

Police say he had been drinking.

Although the victim could not help police, RCMP officers determined that the man had been at a house on Bonnetplume Road before arriving at the Mackenzie Road home, and the incident took place there.

Police later executed a search warrant on a Bonnetplume Road residence, where they seized the suspected axe, but have not yet confirmed that it is the one the man was hit with.

"The weapon wound is consistent with that of an axe and there were a few axes lying around there," said Inuvik RCMP Corporal Sean Neary of the seizure.

Police are attempting to locate any witnesses who may have seen the assault take place. No charges have been laid.
