FORT PROVIDENCE (Feb 06/98) - Fire crews battled cold, snow, winds, flame and smoke in a battle against a stubborn trailer fire here Jan. 28.

"We were out there until about 7:30 in the morning," said Fort Providence RCMP Const. Marco Valin of the blaze which was detected around 3:15 a.m. that morning. "Everything burnt down... Everything... The smoke was pretty thick."

Luckily, no one was hurt during the blaze. However, occupant Jessy Sapp, who was renting the trailer, lost almost all his possessions in the fire.

People in Fort Providence have banded together to help Sapp in his time of need. Anyone wishing to make donations to a special relief fund should contact the hamlet office in Fort Providence for further information.

Const. Valin said officials believe the cause of the fire was electrical in origin.

The incident marked the first time in almost four years that Fort Providence has been the site of a major fire.
