FORT PROVIDENCE (Feb 27/98) - Bravery at the highest level. That's what people gathered to celebrate in Fort Providence Saturday night.

On hand were the RCMP, local dignitaries, and representatives from the GNWT along with Commissioner Helen Makasagak. All were there to honor 16-year-old Alayna Krutko who bravely dove into the Mackenzie River in 1995, saving the life of young Bertha Bouvier.

"For bravery at the highest level presented to Alayna Krutko of Fort Providence, Northwest Territories in recognition of her quick-thinking and brave action when she rescued Bertha Bouvier who fell into the Mackenzie River and was pulled downstream by the current in July 1995," reads the plaque the brave young women received Saturday.

"Ms. Krutko, who without thought for her own safety, demonstrated true courage and diverted a tragedy," read the speaking notes for the ceremony, prepared by Mackenzie Delta MLA David Krutko. "For her brave actions, the committee has recommended that she receive the Commissioner's Award at the highest level."

Now a high school student Fort Smith, Krutko was only 13 when she took on the river and saved the life of a girl even younger than herself.

The pride in her mother's, Evelyn Krutko, voice was obvious during an interview on Tuesday.

"I was excited, very excited," she said. "I was very proud."

The proud mom also said the incident has a lesson for all who live near water.

"I think all children should take swimming lessons (as Alayna had)," she said. "They (lessons) helped make her aware."
