NNSL (Feb 20/98) - Gary Black, a long-time member of the city's public school board is stepping down.

Black cites increasing personal workload and time commitments as his reasons for leaving his seat on the Yellowknife Education District No. 1 board.

"He's been a great asset to the board and will be sorely missed. He was a devoted member to the board," said Ken Woodley, superintendent of the district, yesterday.

Black has led a number of committees within the board and served three terms as the district's chairman during his nine-year stint.

"I think I will remember his untiring energy and passion for education." said Woodley.

The district is left with one empty seat on the board and is sending out letters to individuals who want to serve.

Interested people are asked to forward letters outlining their reasons for wanting to become a member and send them to the attention of Terry Brookes, chairman of the district, no later than 4 p.m., Feb. 27.

"I hope there's a lot of interest. Education is critically important to all of us. I hope there's a healthy show of interest from the community," said Woodley.

Black, who was unavailable for comment by press time, was recently awarded third place in a Microsoft Canada contest.

Black's business, Black and Write was recognized for its "use of technology to gain a competitive advantage," said Microsoft Canada. He will receive Microsoft software and books valued at approximately $1,900.
