NNSL (Feb 18/98) - One firefighter was injured and a homeowner taken to hospital as a result of a house fire on Bromley Drive Saturday afternoon.

The firefighter fell and struck his chest when he fell through a hole that had burned through the floor of the home.

The owner had returned home and tried to fight the blaze with a portable fire extinguisher. He wound up suffering from smoke inhalation.

Both individuals were taken to Stanton Regional Hospital, where they were treated and released.

Neighbors had reported the fire at 3:33 p.m. when they saw smoke pouring from the home. Firefighters entered the home to find the kitchen floor and boiler room engulfed in flames.

A pair of dogs that were in the home when the fire broke out, were rescued and also treated for smoke inhalation. They recovered and were taken to the veterinarian. The fire caused an estimated $80,000 of structural damage and an additional $40,000 in damaged or destroyed contents.

After putting out the fire, firefighters spent two hours in a crawl space under the house removing burnt material to prevent further smoke damage.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it is believed to be accidental, said deputy fire chief Mike Lowing.
