CPI up a fraction

NNSL (Feb 18/98) - Yellowknife's inflation rate rose a tenth of a per cent last year over 1996, Statistics Canada reported.

That compares to a 1.6 per cent annual increase for Canada and 1.8 per cent in Edmonton.

The Whitehorse cost of living rose 2.3 per cent in 1997 compared to the previous year.

For December, the latest month for which figures have been released, prices for consumer goods and services in Yellowknife were up .1 per cent compared to November.

Higher costs for air travel, hotel and motel accommodation, household equipment and fuel oil explained most of the rise in consumer prices in December.

Food prices were unchanged as higher prices for soft drinks, beef, sugar and restaurant meals were offset by lower prices for fruit juice, pork, processed meats and fresh vegetables.

Consumers benefited from lower prices for clothing and footwear, home entertainment equipment and reading materials. Mortgage loan costs were also down.
