NNSL (Feb 13/98) - The MLA who led questioning on the controversial Lahm Ridge Tower lease has signalled a temporary truce.

After summarizing the information that has been collected on the lease, Hay River MLA Jane Groenewegen told the legislative assembly Wednesday , "I believe I've taken this issue as far as I can in this forum."

Groenewegen has been grilling the government about the lease since the session resumed. Two weeks ago, Premier Don Morin said he was fed up with the questioning and challenged Groenewegen to take her concerns to the conflict of interest commissioner or drop the issue.

But during question period Wednesday, Groenewegen asked Morin about a story in last Friday's Yellowknifer that quoted the premier as saying he was sure none of his cabinet ministers wrote an anonymous note containing a veiled threat to Groenewegen. She received the note from an assembly page during last Tuesday's proceedings.

"Is the premier still certain none of his cabinet ministers wrote the note?" Groenewegen asked Wednesday.

"I've never been more certain of anything in my life," responded Morin.

The premier's certainty aside, the search for answers may not be over. Ordinary members were expected to enjoy a dramatic jump in opportunity to question the government about the lease this week.

The budget review by committee of the whole, a forum in which ordinary members are given unlimited time to question the government about its operations, turns next to the Department of Public Works.

Ken Lovely, the deputy minister who authorized the $10-million lease extension, will appear before the assembly to help answer questions about the department.
