RANKIN INLET (Feb 11/98) - Businesses meeting businesses to do business.

That describes the first Manitoba trade mission to the Keewatin set to take place the week of Feb. 16 to 20, according to John Wallace, community economic development officer for Kivalliq Partners in Rankin Inlet.

"We will try to match businesses with businesses -- obviously we wouldn't match somebody from the construction business with somebody from ladies wear," said Wallace. "It will give them a chance to network with local businesses."

The business exchange will involve Manitoba politicians and businesspeople as well as people from across the NWT. In the Kivalliq region, the group is expected to travel to Arviat, Rankin Inlet and Baker Lake.

The mission is taking place at the invitation of NWT Premier Don Morin, who recently signed an agreement with Manitoba Premier Gary Filmon to encourage co-operative ventures between the two regions.

"It's the one that makes sense -- Manitoba -- with regards to the Central Arctic," said Wallace.

Manitoba businesses have supplied more than $100 million in goods and services to the Keewatin region according to David Newman, Manitoba's Northern Affairs minister.

"The Manitoba and NWT governments have enjoyed a co-operative working relationship for some time," he said. "We want to examine ways to broaden our co-operative efforts, building and strengthening the partnerships that are beneficial to both jurisdictions."

At least 21 business delegates and nine political delegates are expected to travel to the Keewatin for the event.

On the evening of Feb. 16, there will be a social a the Siniktarvik Hotel in Rankin Inlet to give the business community an opportunity to meet with the Manitoba delegates. The following morning will also give them a chance to establish contacts within the group.

"The mission's main objective is to promote increased trade and business between the province of Manitoba and the NWT, ensuring both an open yet profitable relationship between both government and business alike," said Ron Roach, regional superintendent for the NWT Department of Resources, Wildlife and Economic Development.

The group will also travel to Iqaluit, Cambridge Bay and Yellowknife.
