Homeowners get tax break
Village assumes costs for former GNWT rebate by Arthur Milnes
FORT SIMPSON (Jan 30/98) - The Village of Fort Simpson is reaching into its own pockets to give local homeowners a break on their property tax this year.
All told, about 70 homeowners are eligible for a grant from the village that translates to 50 per cent of property tax paid up to a maximum of $200.
In order to qualify for the grant, residents must have occupied the residence they own for a minimum of 184 days during the current taxation year. And, municipal taxes for the current year must be paid in full by Dec. 31, 1998.
A similar grant program used to assist local residents and was paid for by the GNWT. This ended in 1995 and village councillors decided to assume the costs this year.
The grant does not apply to other municipal charges including tax penalties or interest.
