NNSL (Jan 30/98) - Yellowknife's Roman Catholic school board is under review.

The board has hired a local consulting firm, Genesis, to bring everything the board stands for under a microscope.

"What we're going to do is review everything from the mission statement to belief statements and value statements," said Don Kindt, assistant superintendent of the board.

"We're going to ask, 'do we really stand for that stuff, or is it a piece of paper on the wall?'"

Loretta Foley, superintendent of the board, said that while all other districts in the North have had reviews in the past, the Roman Catholic board review is unique in that it opens everything they stand for up for criticism.

Three people from the Department of Education, one representing curriculum, one for finance and the third for governance, will be conducting the review.

Other members consist of two board trustees and three senior leaders in the district.

"I think it took a while for the consultants to wrap this idea around in their head and kind of make sense of it," said Kindt.

Following the review, and depending on the results and recommendations, the board may be forced to make changes to its statements.

"That's good, if it's needed," said Foley.

"I think this is brave. I have to give the district credit. I think they're pretty gutsy to put themselves on the line like this," added Kindt.
