Anti-scam campaign

The GNWT has established a consumer scam awareness campaign.

Municipal and Community Affairs, as a member of a National Consumer Measures Committee, developed "Canshare," a computer database that allows tracking of telemarketing complaints between different regions.

"It also provides a way to quickly notify jurisdictions of problem areas by issuing consumer alerts to consumer protection agencies across Canada, said MACA Minister Manitok Thompson.

To further deal with scam artists and telemarketers in the NWT, Manitok said a task force has been formed. Members are drawn from the RCMP, NWT Association of Municipalities, Yellowknife and NWT seniors associations, the NWT Chamber of Commerce and MACA.

Transparency key to P3 success

Seamus Henry, Yellowknife South MLA, endorsed the government's public-private partnership on Monday. Henry also made a call for transparency in government with the P3 policy.

"The principles, provisions and rules of the policy should be made known to the public as widely as possible, as quickly as possible," said Henry.

The government should provide comprehensive workshops on the policy for Northern businesses on a regular schedule in every region."

Cancer prevention

To deal with an increasing rate of breast cancer in the North, the Department of Health and Social Services has come up with a variety of prevention initiatives. Health Minister Kelvin Ng updated the public Monday on the progress of breast cancer screening in the NWT.

"Efforts have been made to improve access by making room for walk-in appointments for people coming from outside Yellowknife," Ng said.

Regional boards have also been encouraged to schedule mammography tests when patients visit Yellowknife. A toll-free cancer information line has been set up in the NWT to answer questions the public might have about cancer.
