NNSL (Jan 21/98) - Unsuspecting Yellowknifers may be saddled with an inaccurate directory invading their privacy.

"It's absolutely ridiculous," said Chamber of Commerce executive director Cheryl Best. "It's awful, I'm telling you."

Best was referring to the directory published by Polk City Directories, headquartered in Livonia, Michigan.

The first yellow pages section on abortion services sets the tone: the sole listing is Dene Nation Chief Bill Erasmus.

"Yes, that's inaccurate," Erasmus confirmed. "This is not the number to phone."

Less glaring errors involve a privacy-invading symbol indicating home ownership.

"It's hopeless in that regard," said retiree Brian Lewis. "I know many people who own their homes who aren't identified as such so I lost faith right away."

The Yellowknife books are in their second year of printing.

And district manager Gordon Feenstra said people must consent to having their home ownership, new mover and length of residency status added to the more common name, profession and street address.

"We hire local enumerators who go to every home and business to get the info," he said. "There's a deletion system where people can ask to have their names or certain information removed."

Before coming to town two years ago, Feenstra said he talked with real estate agents, hotel owners and taxi company managers to gauge support.

"It's only the large volume at our printing plant that makes it possible," Feenstra said of Polk's 2000 directories in North America and 60 in Western Canada. "If there was only the one directory we probably wouldn't break even."

There are two editions of the book: home and business. The home editions are delivered free to residents while the business edition is either sold or given free to advertisers.

Two added sections append the business edition. One lists people by phone number while the other lists people by street address.

Best said she was not enumerated to have her name in the Hutchinson, Kansas-printed books and she has seen interest by the local Western Directories to put together yet another Yellowknife phone book.
