RANKIN INLET (Jan 21/98) - The Keewatin now has three dentists who are expected to travel the region over the next 18 months, providing dental service on a regular basis.

John Karazivan and Ahmed Amer arrived in Rankin Inlet Jan. 12 after a 10-day orientation in Yellowknife at the Adam Dental Clinic, contractors for Kiguti.

Indy Dulay arrived in Rankin Inlet in early November and is based out of the community.

All three dentists are planning to stay in the region for 18 months.

Amer graduated from the University of Calgary in 1986 and has been working since then. Karazivan, who graduated from the University of Montreal in 1996, had been working in the city for the last year and a half when he was hired by Kiguti. Dulay completed the dentistry program at Liverpool Dental Hospital in England in 1993.

The trio are looking forward to their time in the North, and see it as a place where they can make a real difference in the level of dental care patients are receiving.

"It's feels good to be needed," said Amer. "I think people here need good service and I am willing and have the experience to provide that service."

Both dentists were impressed by the orientation they received in Yellowknife, where the facilities and care standards they say, are world class.

"It's one of the highest we've seen across North America," said Amer. "There's a very good team over there and we like being part of this successful team."

Amer and Karazivan also look forward to experiencing a new culture and learning a great deal. "I'm the kind of person that works hard to learn about a new culture to absorb it," said Amer.

Karazivan agrees. "I came here for the adventure," he said.

Amer left on Thursday for Chesterfield Inlet and Karazivan left for Coral Harbour to spend a month in each of the communities. Dulay will remain in Rankin Inlet.
