NNSL (Dec 05/97) - A rapidly growing number of Yellowknifers are turning to food banks to help meet basic nutritional needs.

The Yellowknife Food Bank reports that it served 267 people in November, more than double last year's number for the same period of 127.

"Demand on the Yellowknife Food Bank is expected to continue to climb as winter deepens and Christmas approaches," said Paula Parrell, society chairperson.

On Nov. 5, the food bank distributed free food for 46 children and 67 adults. The numbers for Nov. 19 were 69 children and 85 adults.

The Food Bank is heavily supported by community businesses.

Last month, the food bank collected approximately 1,600 cans of food during Subway's second annual Food-for-Food Drive.

Subway gave away 1,200 subs, triple what was given out at last year's drive.

Quick Mail Plus is also supporting the Food Bank this year. From now until Dec. 16 Quick Mail is offering customers 10 per cent off their total shipping costs if they bring in canned food or other dry goods for the bank.

Parrell also reminds residents that donations for the food bank can be made at Extra Foods stores, the YK Direct Charge Co-op and Wal-Mart.

The food bank is open every other Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at its new location -- 4917 Matonabbee Street in the house directly behind the Calvary Community Church.
