Yellowknife CPI declines slightly

NNSL (Dec 17/97) - Numbers from Statistics Canada show the latest Yellowknife all-items consumer price index fell.

For October, CPI was 0.4 per cent lower than the same month a year ago.

But the Canadian CPI for October rose 1.5 per cent. Edmonton and Whitehorse indices rose 1.7 per cent and 2.4 per cent respectively.

In Yellowknife, prices for consumer goods and services in October were .7 per cent lower compared to September.

Decreased charges for travel accommodation, paper supplies, air travel, fuel oil, and owned accommodation accounted for most of the drop in October prices.

Food, especially fresh produce, milk, beef and pork prices were higher.

Shoppers also paid more for women's and children's clothing, furniture and personal-care supplies.

Fees for recreational facilities moved up as well.
