NNSL (Nov 19/97) - An eight-year-old child called police Saturday night after being left home with an apparently incapacitated grandmother while the parents were out drinking, say police.

RCMP members and Social Services' workers went to the home. They found the child and a seven-month-old sibling left in the care of their grandmother.

The pair, who appeared to be suffering from minor injuries, were removed and placed a temporary care facility for the night.

Police, who say the grandmother was drunk, said they didn't know if the grandmother was drinking before the parents left the Rockridge home, but their investigation into the incident is not yet complete.

"I give a lot of credit to the older child for calling the police," said RCMP Staff Sgt. Dave Grundy.

On Sunday the children were transported to Stanton Regional Hospital, where they were treated for injuries, said Grundy.

He wouldn't say what those injuries were, but said they were consistent with children not being properly cared for.

Social Services is also involved in the investigation, said Grundy. No further details on the fate of the children were available at press time.
