NNSL (Oct 31/97) - The Yellowknife Food Bank has moved to a new location.

Bank volunteers along with Yellowknife Correctional Centre inmates and staff relocated the bank to the Calvary Church residence behind the church and beside Mildred Hall off Franklin Avenue on Oct. 6.

It was re-opened for business Oct. 8.

"Although we're busy, we're seeing very few familiar faces. We're somewhat worried that people who have used the food bank in the past don't know that we've found a new home and that we're open again," said Paula Parrell, chair of the Yellowknife Food Bank Society.

The society moved out of their old home to avoid having to pay rent. The church has allowed them to set up shop free of charge.

"This is obviously a church that truly cares about the health and welfare of the people of Yellowknife and the surrounding area," said Parrell. The food bank distributes food throughout the city, Rae-Edzo, Dettah and Ndilo.

On Wednesday, Oct 8, the first night at the new location, they distributed food for 29 children and 45 adults. On Oct. 22, the count was 21 children and 32 adults, said Parrell.

"Last year we were busier in October," she said.

Parrell hopes public service announcements will inform residents and regulars of their new home so they can come down and get the help they need.

The Yellowknife Food Bank is open every other Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. It opens again on Nov. 5 and Nov. 19.

Parrell asks people to spread the word about the food bank to anyone who might be in need.
