Teachers ratify contract

NNSL (Oct 27/97) - The NWT Teachers' Association has ratified a collective agreement that includes an improved Northern allowance.

Association president Pat Thomas said Friday the new allowance means teachers will collectively bring in an additional $1 million.

Turnout was 94 per cent with 70 per cent voting for the deal.

The agreement also includes a $1,500 signing bonus for teachers on staff at the beginning of the 1996/97 school year.

The agreement covers Sept.1, 1996 to Aug. 31, 1999.

Thomas said the association will now turn its attention to "an improved Public Services Act" and expects to provide government with proposals early next year.
