NNSL (Oct 24/97) - Aurora College students will soon be getting a new home.

Construction workers have been busy lately, gutting out the first three floors of Northern United Place to make way for the new campus.

Classroom space, administrative offices and a library will be built where the department of Economic Development and Tourism and Social Services was once housed.

"Aurora College has been looking for a place for a while now," said Craig Shenher, property manager for NWT Community Services Corporation, who's overseeing the NUP project.

The cost of the west-side renovation is about $1 million.

On the east side, Tower A of NUP, 35 two- and three-bedroom apartments are getting facelifts.

The completion date is expected to be sometime during the Christmas break and students will be able to move into their residence in January.

"The building is an ideal central location. Students don't need a vehicle to get around," said Shenher.

Northern United Place is run by a board of directors. It is a non-profit organization that provides low-cost housing to seniors and young people and those with lower income.

The building, constructed in 1975, is located on 54th Street at Franklin Ave. It houses the United Church, an auditorium and 84 seniors.

Aurora College has agreed to sign 10-year lease on the building for the campus.
