NNSL (Sep 05/97) - The Yellowknife Food Bank Society may cut its hours of operation in half, according to the organization's new co-chair.

It all depends on volunteers, Paula Parrell said earlier this week.

Currently, the food bank opens Wednesdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. But it may cut back to every other week.

To collect names, the food bank has slated a volunteer meeting for Thursday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. in the storefront boardroom at the Roman Empire Building on 51st Avenue.

Last year, the food bank's list of volunteers included only eight names, stretching the organization's ability to open weekly, she said.

Parrell was one of those eight.

It was her involvement as a volunteer that motivated her to become the organization's co-chair.

"The food bank is needed. Between 35 and 45 people visit the food bank weekly," she said.

Last week, the Food Bank Society elected a new executive. With co-chairs Parrell and Patricia Rapley. The executive includes secretary Josie Gould and treasurer Kathy Hrynczuk.

Directors are Jacqueline Fitzpatrick, Linn-Marie Slaven, Brad Heath and Bren Stamp.

At the AGM, all executive members and directors were elected by acclamation.
