NNSL (Sep 10/97) - This kind of hair loss is good.

New Beginnings hair salon staff will donate proceeds from an afternoon of hair-cutting to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation's annual Run for the Cure.

The Centre Square salon will open the afternoon of Sunday, Sept. 25, for the fundraiser.

In addition to their time, staff will also donate tips.

Seventy-five percent of all money raised locally helps pay for a new $150,000 mammography machine at Stanton Regional Hospital. The remainder goes to a national fund for research.

"We find it fun. We have a great time doing these things," New Beginnings owner Claudette Fehr said.

"The fundraiser gets us involved."

The business has hosted fundraisers for the Help Line in the past.

Staff scheduled to be on hand for the fundraiser are Ginette Gaudet, Pam Gerhardt, Michelle Fortin, Karen Pickering, Isabelle Wilson, Ivan Seymour, Angela Grimm, Jolan Roy, April Alexander and Jenny Fischlin.

"It's a good cause. We want to help the hospital get the new machine. The more comfortable the machine, the better," Fischlin said.

She was among those in a recent impromptu swim in Old Town which raised $750 in about 20 minutes for a new mammography machine for Stanton Regional Hospital.

Run for the Cure, slated for Oct. 5, started in Toronto in the early 1990s and has grown to 18 sites. This will be Yellowknife's second Run.

Last year, the event's 250 participants raised $15,000 afer only three week's preparation, Yellowknife event director Terry Chang said.

"Our goal this year is to double participation and to double fundraising," she said. "Many people are rallying together to support the event."

Chang said it's great to see people "inspired to take on their own initiatives."
