Council looking at curfew

NNSL (Aug 13/97) - Council is taking a stand on what can be done about the recent rash of violence in the downtown area of Yellowknife.

City administration, directed by a council decision at Monday night's meeting, will be preparing a report on the level of street violence.

Mayor Dave Lovell said that the report will be designed to do two things -- first, to look at who's responsible for the violence, and second, whether or not the reintroduction of a curfew bylaw would decrease the number of incidents that have become a problem in the city's downtown core in recent weeks.

While Lovell said that the study won't be a formal, bound report, it will be used to help rectify the situation. "It will be two to six pages," he said. "It will be presented as a committee report."

Lovell said he expects that the report will use information about the series of assaults from the RCMP to solve the problem.

"Once we know what we're dealing with, we'll know what to do about it," he said.

Lovell, did however, say yesterday that recent arrests in connection with the assaults may mean that the RCMP have identified a select group of people who are involved in the rash of violence.

"It may already be taken care of," he added.

The report, prepared by administration, is due to come before committee on Sept. 3.
