NNSL (July 9/97) - NWT Federation of Labor president Jim Evoy is slamming the process being used to sort out territorial finances for division.

"The Northwest Territories is not comprised only of businessmen and politicians," Evoy said in an interview Friday.

The labor leader was referring to those involved in division of GNWT assets and liabilities between the western territory and Nunavut, and negotiation of transitional and long-term funding for the two new territories.

The western coalition, the group responsible for representing western interests, is comprised of politicians, business leaders and bureaucrats.

Evoy was particularly concerned about the lack of public discussion on the fate of the Workers' Compensation Board and the $150 million fund it administers.

Gerry Meier, president of the WCB, was not available for comment. But a spokesperson for the WCB office says all calls related to division are being directed to the ministerial level.

The fund is used to pay compensation in cases of workplace injuries or deaths.

"Who gave them the right to negotiate away our futures, and do it behind closed doors?" asked Evoy.
