NNSL (July 2/97) - RCMP are investigating a fire that destroyed a former cafe in Rae Sunday night.

"We have determined suspects as far as the responsibility for the fire goes," said Const. Darrell Robertson.

He said the suspects police believe touched off the blaze -- none of whom have been charged by police -- are all under the age of 18.

The Rae RCMP detachment member said that about 10 firefighters fought the flames beginning at about 9:30 p.m., and then returned when the fire flared up again.

"In the second instance, they lost control of the fire," said Robertson. "Basically, it's still hot now."

The building was owned by Arny Steinwand, who also owns Rae's Jeik'o Motel. The former pool hall and cafe had been closed for several months wasn't insured.

Robertson didn't have an estimate of the damage caused by the fire.

The fire marshall is also investigating the fire, and was scheduled to be in Rae Monday night to look through the rubble.
