NNSL (July 18/97) - Kids in Sissons Court are using their talents to put the wraps on neighborhood vandalism. More than 20 kids recently painted a mural on the sides of two apartment units in Sissons Court to cover up offensive graffiti.

"Now you don't have to look at the 'F' words on the wall -- put there by older kids who don't live in the neighborhood," said Alex Wentland, 12, who helped paint the mural.

And the cleanup work doesn't stop here.

Wentland said that there's more graffiti on some walls a few rows down from where she lives, and she's eyeing them as well. "We could probably paint those too," she said.

Anne Marie Habibi, who came up with the idea for the project last summer, said she had to do something about the graffiti because it was so offensive.

"There were lots of graffiti on the wall -- swear words and porno pictures that I think were violent in nature," she said.

Habibi asked the people who run Sissons Court last year if she could go ahead with the painting, but said she did it too late in the year. "So I decided to do it this year," she said.

The project went ahead after Habibi asked Beaver Lumber and Canadian Tire to donate paint and supplies.

The group, which includes five parents besides Habibi, painted "We Count" on a mural of handprints.

"We put 'We Count' there to show the kids that the things they do can make a difference," she said.
