NNSL (June 23/97) - Hay River running phenomenon Paul Green took first place in his rookie race on the Yellowknife Arctic Runners Club Fathers Day 5- and 10-kilometre competition.

It seemed like deja vu for Green, who, just as he did at the NWT Track and Field Championships June 4 in Hay River, edged out Ruari Carthew of Yellowknife with a 10-kilometre time of 33:33 to claim top spot.

At 26, Green recently moved to the capital city to work for the summer, and he plans to be a regular participant on the long-distance running scene there.

"I know a lot of these races through skiing so I thought it would be a good race to come out to," said the cheerful Green after the victory.

Running has been in Green's blood for years, as he still currently holds numerous NWT long-distance running records, but lately he has turned to a more recreational state of mind, after several successful seasons on both the Queen's University cross-country running and skiing teams.

"I used to compete heavily at university. Now I mainly like to run for the fun of it."
