NNSL (June 18/97) -

A 58-year-old former Enterprise settlement councillor charged last October with seven sex-related crimes is back in custody.

Hay River RCMP arrested Jake Klassen over the weekend after he was found camping in a public park on Saturday, a violation of his bail order.

Police say he was camping in his van 95 kilometres east of Hay River at Sandy Lake. Klassen is under a court order not to enter Enterprise, as well as areas where there are children -- campgrounds, picnic areas, parks and school property.

He has had to live by these conditions since he was released from custody after the original charges were laid Oct. 10. He was a settlement councillor at the time.

Klassen will remain in custody in Hay River until a court hearing takes place.

Cpl. Rick Potvin of the Hay River detachment said that bail conditions for this type of charge isn't uncommon. "He is supposed to reside in Yellowknife," he said. "It's not unusual at all in this type of case (for such conditions to be placed on an accused)."

Potvin said that Klassen has also been charged with obstructing justice as a result of the ongoing RCMP investigation into the case.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court for a bail hearing June 18.
