NNSL (May 28/97) - Now that the summer months are approaching, many students will be looking for a summer job.

Some are already employed and will just keep the job they have. Others will start a job hunt. Now, you ask, are there even any jobs for students? Yes, there are jobs out there for students. All you have to do is look around.

For some students finding a job is rather easy. On the other hand some people have a very hard time. I wonder why this is. Maybe because some students are more outgoing than others. Or is it because some students have better credentials for the positions?

Some students just go out and drop off resumes at every place in town, whether the store is looking or not. I think a good way to find a job is to open up the back of the newspaper and look in the employment section and see what's there.

I know not all places advertise in the newspaper, but many do, so it is a good place to look.

What kind of job do you really want? Many students will go for any job just as long as it pays a lot of money. Other students try to get a job that they are interested in. You don't always have that option though.

Students around Yellowknife have part-time jobs, with hours in the evening and on the weekend. Over the summer your hours will probably increase. Some employers may even offer you a full-time position for the summer. Wouldn't that be nice?

Throughout Yellowknife there are many places that you could look for a job. Anything from working at a restaurant to construction. The city in past years has had many students working for them. Sometimes students think that the city does not do enough to help, but I think they try their best to help everyone.

Also the government has some programs aimed especially for student employment. I think this is a great idea -- it gives students a chance to work with people in a professional field. This is very good for the student because it prepares them for the workforce later on in life.

You must remember that with any job there are some benefits. You will have money in your pocket. Don't forget that with most jobs you get paid every two weeks. So don't go out and spend all of your money in the first week, because then you will have to beg for money from mommy and daddy.

I think a very important benefit is the experience you obtain from working. You learn many skills while working -- half of them you probably would not expect. These skills are will come in handy sometime in life.

Also it is very important for you to remember that with any job you do you have to work. I know this can be hard for some of you out there, but working is much better than being fired! So don't forget there is a lot you can gain from having a job.
