Leaping into the future

NNSL (JAN 03/97) - The public school board is recruiting volunteers to guide a study that will identify the future role of schools.

A steering committee will meet once or twice a month beginning in January to discuss future needs of students. They will forward research suggestions for a study -- likely to be done by a graduate student or teacher -- beginning as early as next summer.

Ken Woodley, superintendent of the Yellowknife Education District No. 1, said that educators have to start looking seriously at what skills students will need in the 21st century.

"We know that over the last 10 years education has changed," he said. "We are taking a proactive look at what students need."

Similar to the city's strategic planning initiative, Future Focus Forum, the Student Future Needs Committee will lay the foundation for the tools students will need for the future.

Woodley said that the research data will be used to identify ways of providing students with the tools needed for life in the next century.

"The research will inform us of the likely needs of our students in the 21st century," he said.

After the report is finished, the committee will analyze the results and assist in the development of new education strategies that will provide better training for students.

"Ultimately, the students should be better prepared once they get out," Woodley said.

Gary Black, chairman of the public education board, is currently accepting applications for the committee positions.
