NNSL (DEC 06/96) - A man ordered by the court to stay away from his harassment victim has been arrested and is being held in custody, charged with breaking that order.

Mounties arrested the man Nov. 30 when he turned up at the RCMP detachment on an unrelated matter.

A warrant had been issued for his arrest in early November after the woman he was convicted of following for almost three months told police the man had contacted her again.

He had been granted a suspended sentence Oct. 16 and placed on probation for two years on condition he not contact the woman in any way.

The man, who represented himself during his autumn sentencing hearing, again represented himself at a bail hearing Tuesday in territorial court.

For nearly an hour-and-a-half the man tried to convince Judge Thomas Davis why he should not be held in custody while awaiting further court appearances on the single charge of failure to comply with a court order.

Crown lawyer Sandra Aitken suggested to Davis that there is no guarantee the man won't break the court order again in the meantime.

Davis asked the man to take a few more days to put together an argument for his release. He remanded the man in custody and scheduled his next appearance for this afternoon.
